Women’s Empowerment in Local Governance- a Case of Yaa Donkor

As a trained Community Development Monitor (CDM) in the Sekyere East District, Yaa Donkor filed her nomination to vie for an Assembly member in the Ahensan electoral area when nominations were opened for the 2019 District Level Elections. Previously, she was a unit committee member and also the leader of the CHPS compound monitoring committee formed at Ahensan under the GSAM project. Yaa and her team were very influential in engaging the District Assembly during the Construction of the CHPS compound using community scorecards. The CHPS project has since been completed and in use.

Yaa Donkor participated in capacity building activities under the project that enhanced her leadership and advocacy skills and knowledge about the Local Governance System. She featured in a documentary on the impact of the GSAM project in Sekyere East and was also part of a panel discussion on Nhyira FM (104.5) during a GSAM Radio programme. She was later selected as one of the active citizens who took part in a workshop to develop GAS II scorecards based on findings from the performance audit.

In the run up to the district level elections, the project team followed up on how she was fearing in her campaign trail.  Yaa Donkor is now the elected Assembly member for the Ahensan electoral area, having won a landslide victory in the 2019 district level elections.  Yaa Donkor after her victory was grateful to the GSAM project for the technical support provided her. She indicated that ‘’ my experience with GSAM gave me the exposure and I gained an edge over my competitors. I have also been enlightened on development issues under the project and I hope this will help me serve my electorates well’’. Yaa is one of only two female elected Assembly members in the district.
